KUNITSUGU WAKIZASHI

This is a very nice hira-zukuri wakizashi signed Echizen Daijo Fujiwara Kunitsugu. Kunitsugu was a chu-josaku rated smith of the Yamashiro area who worked around 1648. He was either the son or student of the famous smith, Dewa Daijo Kunimichi. We know this because there are dai-saku blades of these smiths (blades made together). Kunitsugu also made swords in Echizen Province and later he mosed to Kumamoto in Higo Province.

The blade length is 36 cm or 14.17 inches. The sori is 0.5 cm or .19 inches. The kasane is .59 cm or .23 inches. Finally, the moto haba width is 3.03 cm or 1.19 inches. The hada is very finely worked itame with lots of ji-nie. The hamon is ko-nie based and done in a gunome-midare with many activities such as sunagashi, and small kinsuji. It is nijuba in places.

This blade comes in a shirasaya with a gold wrapped habaki. It has NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to its condition, authenticity and quality.
