TACHI-KANAGUSHI TSUBA
The Tachi-kanagushi tsuba was made by the maker of tachi fittings. Often they were made through the collaboration of two artists, one who hammered the plate and the other who did the decoration. They date to the Muromachi and Momoyama Eras (1400's to early 1600's). They used a variety of soft metals such as bronze, yamagane, shinchu, suaka (pure copper), and shakudo. This one appears to have been made of yamagane. This tsuba is well carved with a water dragon among the waves on one side and a dragon among the clouds on the other. Additionally the wide mimi (rim) is delicately carved with clouds. It measures 3 1/8 inches by 2 3/4 inches or 7.9 cm by 7.1 cm. The condition is excellent and I have seen tsuba of this type sell in Japan for four or five times the listing price of this tsuba.
