BOY'S SWORD BY SADANORI

This is an unusual item in that it is a mumei Boy's sword that has been attributed to Sadanori of the Osaka Shinto school. Boy's swords were made by smiths to earn extra cash. Wealthy patrons ordered them as gifts for their sons on important anniversary birthday's such as 3years, 5 years, and 7 years. This sword is a scale model of a katana. It has an overall measurement of 16 1/8 inches or 41 cm. The cutting edge of the sword is 30.7 cm or just over 12 inches. It has an extended kissaki and a graceful sori. The hamon is a shallow notare with loads of nie. The hada is a flowing itame that is a little coarse in spots. It is ubu with one hole.

Sadanori is a jo-saku rated smith who worked in the late 1600's to early 1700's. His given name was Sukeuemon. He was originally from Higo and he moved to Osaka and became a student of Inoue Shinkai. He later became a sword smith for the Naito Han and moved to Iwaki in the Oshu area of northern Honshu.

This sword comes with NTHK papers which give the attribution to Sadanori. It has a new shirasaya and shakudo habaki. It is in fresh polish.
