KOZUKA BY GOTO JOSHIN

Goto Joshin was the third mainline master of the Goto family. He was born in 1505 and he died in 1562. He was the eldest son of Goto Sojo. He was a Samurai retainer of Ashikaga Yoshiharu. On April 5, 1528 rioting broke out at the camp enclosure where Joshin was stationed. He battled the insurgents and drove them off. He was known to be very strong and brave. These traits can be seen in his fittings which are strong, sharp, and bold. He shows great detail in his carvings. Since his father and grandfather died while he was still young, he had little relationship with their styles and developed his onw designs which were far stronger. This kozuka shows that strength. It is carved in solid gold with a very high relief. It shows Hotei resting on what appears to be a large radish. He is considered to have been as fine an artist as his grandfather, Goto Yujo; and superior to his father, Sojo. Since he did not sign his works, many of his pieces are authenticated by later Goto masters. This is the case with this kozuka. It is certified as his work by the twelfth mainline Goto master Jujou who lived in 1689-1742.
