KOSHIRAE

WAKIZASHI BY TO YOSHIMICHI
This is a nicely mounted mumei wakizashi that has been attributed to Tanba (no) Kami Yoshimichi. There were several generations of smiths who worked by this name. The papers place this sword in the Enpo era which was around 1673 and the time of the second generation smith by this name. This blade is definitely by a smith of the Mishina school as it has the beautiful and distinctive sudareba hamon which reminds one of wind swept sands at the beach. The clouds of nie form these beautiful and distinctive patterns. The cutting edge of this sword is 19 3/4 inches or 50.2 cm. It has a graceful koshi sori. It is in very good polish and can be enjoyed as it is.
Accompanying this sword is a very nice set of mounts. The saya is black iro iro lacquer which is in excellent condition. The tsuba is iron and is carved with a dragon amoung the waves. The fuchi and kashira are shakudo nanako with a gold and shakudo on each one. The fuchi is signed by its artist, Masatoshi. The menuki are also gold and shakudo dragons. The kozuka is quite interesting. It is iron with a gold reverse (some losses tot he gold foil). Carved on the iron plate are three birds with gold eyes and feet. They are very well carved.
This sword and its mountings comes with two sets of papers, one for the sword and one for the mountings. Both are issued by the Bitjitsu Nihonto Hozon Shinza Kai. The papers were issued in 1976.
This is a very nice sword with complete mountings and it would be a great sword with which to start your collection, or to add to your collection if you are looking for a sword from the Mishina school. The seller is offering this sword at a price tha tis very close to the cost of the polish and mountings, a great value.
