This is a fine suit of armor from the Mid-Edo period ( 18th Century). The helmet bowl is comprised of 62 plates of iron that have been welded together and lacquered dark brown to resemble russet iron. This is a heavy bowl that is in beautiful condition. The mabezashi (visor) supports a very fine maedate in the shape of a ken sword. The shikoro has five lames of iron that have been lacquered a deep green that is almost black looking. The top lame turns back into two small fuki-gaeshi that are lacquered in the same manner.
The menpo is of fine russet iron and sports a great mustache. The throat guard is made of kozane laced lames that have a blue ito. The sode are made up of six lames that are matching the shikoro. In fact all of the parts of the body armor are matching. The sode (arm protectors) are comprised of chain mail and lacquered iron pieces.
The haidate (thigh protectors are in excellent condition with the original cloth backing matching that of the sode. This is one of the signs you look for to determine if the overall suit of armor is, indeed, a matched set as this one is (except for the menpo). The suneate are made of lacquered iron plates that are connected with chain mail. This is a top quality suit of armor that comes with its old armor box that has a family crest on the sides. This suit is being offered at a very reasonable price for a complete suit of this quality.
