BEAUTIFUL MOUNTED KATANA BY TADAYUKI
This is a beautiful katana by the Osaka Shinto smith, Tadayuki. This blade was made by the second generation who worked around the 1680's. He was from the Tadatsuna school and this katana reminds us of Tadatsuna's work. The hada is a beautiful tight itame with ko-mokume. Ji nie and chikei appear on the small mokume hada. The hamon is nioi deki which starts as suguba near the hamachi and turns into a robust gunome-choji midare. The habuchi is bright making a brilliant hamon. This sword measures 27 3/4 inches and is ubu (unshortened).
This sword comes with a fine set of koshirae. The tsuba is of the Jingo school and has a design of waves, clouds and a butterfly done in silver nunome. It looks copperish in the photos but it is silver with an old patina. The menuki are shakudo and gold and depict a Chinese figure. The fuchi, kashira and kojiri (not shown) are all of silver and done in a wave design. These mounts probably date to the Meiji Era.
This fine katana was awarded Tokubetsu Hozon papers by the NBTHK which attests to its condition and quality.
