JUYO KODOGU HIGO KOSHIRAE

This is a truly outstanding set of middle Edo era Higo koshirae. This style of koshirae was favored by Oda Nobunaga. Higo koshirae were developed under the guidance of the lord of Higo domain, Hosokawa Sansai Tadaoki (1564-1645). who had profound knowledge of the tea ceremony as Sen no Rikyu's (1522-1591) finest disciple and who excelled in both the military and literary arts. The outstanding feature of these koshirae is the avoidance of the gaudy and ornate, while achieving a refined elegance with their austerity.

Here are the measurements of this koshirae:

Saya:
Length: 28 inches

Tsuka:
Length: 8 inches
Mekugi ana: 1 13/16 inches from the front edge of the fuchi

Tsuba:
Nakago ana: 1 1/8 inches by 1/2 inch

Tsunagi:
Length: 26 7/16 inches
Sori: 13/16 inches
Motohaba: 1 1/4 nches
Sakihaba: 13/16 inches
Nakago length: 6 15/16 inches

This koshirae embodies all of those characteristics. The tsuka has black lacquered same and is wrapped in a greenish doe skin wrap which matches the sageo. The menuki are simple shakudo with gold Hosokawa family mon. The tsuba is typical Higo done in a modified sea cucumber style. The fuchi and kashira are simple iron with slight gold decoration. The kozuka is shakudo with the Hosokawa family mon. The kogai is shakudo with two birds. The saya is a very fine same that has been lacquered.

This koshirae went Juyo in Showa 40 or 1965. It is my opinion that old Juyo papers like this are very precious as at that time the judgements for Juyo were extremely strict.

PRICE: $ 23,500.00
