TENSHO MOUNTED JUYO KATANA BY BIZEN NAGAMORI



This is a beautifully mounted katana by the famous smith Bizen Nagamori. Nagamori is considered to have been one of the primary students of Bizen Chogi, remaining works by him are the rarest of all the students. Chogi was one of the ten famous students of Masamune. Like Chogi, Nagamori's works are representative of the Soden-Bizen tradition wherein nie based Soshu traits were interspersed with traditional Bizen characteristics. Here are the characteristics of this outstanding blade:

Shape: Shinogi-zukuri tachi which has been shortened to katana length. This is a wide and very strong blade.

Nagasa: 67.3 cm

Sori: 1.4 cm

Moto-haba: 2.9 cm

Kitae: Itame hada with areas of mokume hada, ji-nie, chikei, and a few yubashiri.

Hamon: Based on Gunome with Choji, mixed with small Notare. There are a lot of small Nie, kinsuji, and ko-ashi.

Boshi: Notare with nie-kuzuri with a short turnback

Nakago: O-suriage mumei

Horimono: Bo-hi on both sides

 

KOSHIRAE

This sword has a Tensho style (1500's) koshirae which is in excellent condition. The tsuba is iron sukashi and of outstanding workmanship. The tsuka is wraped in dyed doe skin. The fuchi is iron with a wide groove. The kashira is horn. The menuki are ko-mino cherry blossom flowers and leaves. The kogai is also ko-mino and is made of shakudo. It also dates to the 1500's.

This blade was awarded Juyo Token status by the NBTHK in 1969.
