KOSHIRAE

YOROI DOSHI BY HISATSUGU
This is an interesting yoroi doshi (armor piercing dagger) from the Muromachi Era (1400's-1500's). It is signed by its maker with the two character signature Hisatsugu. The NBTHK Hozon papers attribute it to one of the smiths by this name who worked in the Muromachi Era but they were uncertain as to which one. There were a number of them from the Bitchu Aoe group of smiths working around this time period and it may be one of them This is an extremely thick blade made in a triangular shape as one would expect for a dagger of this type. This is an old sword with some lamination separations as one would expect. When you hold this dagger, you can feel its strength and wonder about all the battles it survived. The hamon is a suguha based shallow notare as one would expect with a blade of this thickness. The hada is a flowing masame. Within the hada are areas of very bright ji-nie. This sword measures 8 5/8 inches or 22 cm.
This tanto comes with an interesting wakizashi koshirae. I have seen tanto mounted as wakizashi before. The tsuba is silver and signed by its maker. It has plum blossoms carved in relief. The fuchi and kashira are mottled iron and match the very large kojiri at the base of the saya. The kozuka is shakudo with the figure of a Samurai in court dress. The blade for the kozuka is signed Gifu Kaneshige. The umabari is also shakudo with floral designs. Of note the kurikata is shakudo with a family mon skillfully carved on it. The saya is a mottled black lacquer. There is some old repaired damage around the kozuka.
