This is a lovely tsuba with an unusual shape. It is made of iron and comprised of four almost circular lobes that are carved to represent wickerwork. It is 3.125 inches by 3.125 inches or 7.9 cm by 7.9 cm. The outer edge has a raised mimi (rim) which adds definition to the lobes and makes each one appear to be a separate basket surrounding the nakago ana. This tsuba comes with old NBTHK Tokubetsu Kitcho Kodogu papers that describe it as a wickerwork tsuba with no specific school given. These papers are dated Showa 38 or 1963. It would be interesting to see what school they might attribute it to today if it were re-submitted. Hozon papers should be no problem.
