This is a very fine Ko-Tosho tsuba from the Muromachi era of the 16th century. Ko-Tosho tsuba were made by swordsmiths (Tosho). It is a large tsuba measuring 8.9 cm or 3.5 inches round. It is a very thin plate which is indicative of the period of manufacture. It is a simple design of four vertical bars carved in sukashi with two on either side of the nakago ana. There are no hitsu-ana indicating its being preserved in its original design without alteration. There are traces of old lacquer on its surface. The overall condition of this tsuba is excellent and it comes in a custom made fitted box. It was awarded NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers due to its exemplary quality and condition.
