This is a very impressive and large daisho set of Sôten tsuba by Yoshitomo.  Yoshitomo worked around 1700-1750.  He was a student of the son of the first Sôten who founded this prolific school at the beginning of the Edo period.  The full signature on these tsuba is Gôshû Hikone Jû Saichôshi Iriyama Nyûdo Yoshitomo (kao).

The dai (larger) tsuba measures 3 ¼ inches or 8.3 cm by 2 7/8 inches or 7.4 cm.  The sho (smaller) tsuba measures 3 3/16 inches or 8.1 cm by 2 13/16 inches or 7.2 cm.  These tsuba are made of iron and depict male and female dragon on each with gold highlights.   There is a gold foil band covering the mimi (rim) of both tsuba.

The dragons are carved in intricate detail and a patient person can actually count the individual scales on each dragon.  The smaller of the two tsuba depicts the female dragon who is shown as soaring among the clouds.  The larger tsuba shows the male dragon with his head and body swimming in the ocean while his tail is among the clouds.

These tsuba are representative of the truly fine work that was created by some of the top Sôten craftsmen.  They have been awarded NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers that attests to the authenticity of  the signature and the outstanding quality of the workmanship.  They come in a custom made fitted box and are in great condition with no losses or defects.
