I am pleased to offer for sale this fine katana from the Bungo Takada school. It is mumei (unsigned) but the workmanship is typical of the Bungo school. It dates to the Genroku era or around 1688. The hada is a very pronounced mokume which is quite beautiful. The hamon is typical nioi deki done in the koshi-no-hirata mixed with midare and yaki-kuzure. The shape is a shallow torii sori with a sori of 1.0 cm or 3/8 inches. This blade has a thick kasane and slightly stretched chu-kissaki with a small turn-back on one side and almost no turn-back on the other. The cutting edge of this katana is 66.6 cm or 26 3/16 inches.
Bungo blades were prized for their strength and practical characteristics being sought out by serious Samurai because of their cutting ability. This blade has a fresh polish which shows its beauty well. It has a one piece shakudo wrapped habaki and comes in an old shirasaya. Accompanying this blade are NTHK papers giving the attribution to the Bungo Takada school. This is a very beautiful blade that is reasonably priced.
