This is a very fine example of an iron Tochibata tsuba. This school of tsuba making is a relatively small one and their work often resembles that of the Ono school. This design is very typical with a rope rim, thick plate, and a simple design. The design of this tsuba is a grappling hook within the rope rim.
This slightly oval tsuba measures 2.89 inches or 7.4 cm by 2.74 inches or 7.0 cm. It is thick measuring .28 inches or 0.7 cm. This sort of thickness is also very typical and resembles the works of the Ono school. The patina is excellent and there is no rust. This tsuba comes with NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to its quality and the attribution to the Tochibata school. It comes in a fitted wooden box. It is being offered at a price that is only nominally above the cost of the box and the NBTHK papers.
