This is a large and unusual Tenpo tsuba from the mid 1800’s. Usually Tenpo iron tsuba are very plain with only a few kanji characters carved into the four sided iron plate. This one is quite interesting in that eight views from Lake Biwa in Gifu are skillfully inlaid into the iron plate. Each view is carved in silver and depicts a building, temple, scenic view, or castle. These carvings are done in great detail and each is a bit of art in itself.
This tsuba is large measuring 3 3/8 inches by 3 3/16 inches. It is unsigned and comes in a fitted wooden box. This is truly a work of art done in miniature.
