This is an outstanding and unusual pair of solid gold menuki of the Ko-kinko school. They date to the latter Muromachi Era of the late 1500’s and are in superb condition. The subject of these menuki are two very large grasshoppers.
One of these menuki measures a full 4.6 cm or 1.80 inches by 2.1 cm or 0.83 inches and the other measures 4.4 cm or 1.72 inches by 2.3 cm or 0.91 inches. They weigh 7.1 grams and 6.7 grams respectively. They are very large and breathtaking. As noted, they are in wonderful condition and show the much sought after reddish tinges of aging, particularly in the antennae.
They come in a custom made fitted wooden box and are accompanied by NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to their quality and the attribution.
