This is a wonderful tsuba from the Yagami school of Hizen Province.  They were known as excellent craftsmen in the creation of Namban style tsuba.

The shape of this tsuba is called tatemaru-gata which means it is an elongated round tsuba.  It measures 2.91 inches high by 2.77 inches in width.  It is carved in the nikubori-ji-sukashi style.  This means that it is a sukashi (open carved) tsuba where the sukashi (openings) are carved in a more three dimensional manner, rather than just flat openings as are found on some other schools of carving.

The carving done on this iron tsuba is intricate and delicate.  The design is that of flowers and vines with several of the flowers being decorated with gold nunome-zôgan.  In certain areas the iron plate of the tsuba has been carved all of the way through giving the tsuba an even more delicate appearance.

This tsuba comes with NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to the attribution to the Yagami school and the quality of this tsuba.  It comes in a custom made fitted box of the highest quality.
