This is an truly understated and yet outstanding tsuba from the Shônai School tsuba. It is described in the NBTHK papers as depicting the elegance of two trees in mid-winter. It is made on a thin plate of suaka (pure copper) and delicately carved with a cherry tree on the obverse and bamboo tree on the reverse. Both are artfully carved in kibori style. It had a mimi( rim) that his hammered so that it created a thin raised rim. The plate is also sporadically hammered giving an overall artistic feeling to this tsuba.
This tsuba measures 2.68 inches high and 2.48 inches wide. It is in excellent condition and the patina of the copper plate is flawless. Also of note is that it is done in the style of Goto Ichijo. Very Impressive!
This tsuba comes with NBTHK Hozon papers attesting to the attribution to the Shonai school and the quality of this tsuba. It comes in a custom made fitted box of the highest quality.
