This is a very nice wakizashi by the Mino smith, Kanetaka. It is signed Bungo (no) Kami Fujiwara Kanetaka. Kanetaka worked around 1624 in the Kanei era. He lived in Noshu in Gifu. His swords are known for their wide bodies and this is an excellent example.
This wakizashi is hira zukuri and measures 18 9/16 inches or 47.1 cm. It is wide with a motohaba of 1 3/8 inches or 3.5 cm. The hada is a beautiful itame with areas of mokume and pronounced o-hada. As with all Mino blades, there are spots of togare-ba in the hamon. There is a ken and bonji carved on the omote and futatsu his with a bonji on the ura. It is in excellent polish with no flaws. It comes with Tokubetsu Hozon papers that attest to the high quality of the blade and the quality of the maker.
