This is a very nice tsuba of the Soten school. It measures 3 3/8 inches or 8.2 cm by 2 7/8 inches or 7.5 cm. The obverse shows four battling Samurai in full armor and the reverse shows one Samurai peaking through the rocks. This scene depicts a battle of the Gempei war which took place in the 12th century between the Genji and Heike armies for military dominance of Japan. It is carved in iron with gold, silver, and copper used to depict the Samurai and their armor. The mimi (rim) is done in a heavy gold foil. The overall condition of this tsuba is excellent.
It comes with NBTHK Hozon papers issued in the first year of the Heisei era (1988). It also comes in a nice wooden fitted box.
